How To Select the Right Router

In the market of power tools, you can find hundreds of types of handheld devices, in which the novice craftsman is easily confused. When choosing a manual router, you must first determine the capabilities of the device, the price category, the proposed workflows. A manual milling machine will be a great help for a home master. Where previously it was necessary to choose reliefs on the plane with a chisel, it is difficult to form complex grooves after several cuts, now with the help of a router it is possible to handle one pass. This saves time and achieves precision that is not available for manual processing.

Differences between manual milling machines and a milling machine

During the work of the vertical milling machine, invented only at the beginning of the XIX century, simultaneous movement of the cutting mill and the movable base on which the workpiece is fixed. The main processing of the plane (edge) is performed by a rotating milling cutter fixed in the spindle.

Semi-professional household milling machines designed for autonomous use appeared much later – in the second half of the last century. Hand milling machines, for the most part, produce the processing of wooden parts, using only the rotation of the milling cutter. Movement of the mechanism along a fixed base is done manually. Some designs of a manual milling machine allow it to be fixed with milling cutters. In this position, the workpiece must be moved manually, which is more convenient for small parts.

The hand mill is designed primarily for decorative processing of wood, but it also allows working with other soft materials. The device can be used for the design of home partitions, furniture repair, installation of complex structures of soft metals.

Features of a manual milling machine

In domestic work, when making furniture, the router makes it much easier:

  • formation of seats;
  • cutting work, rough alignment;
  • edge profiling;
  • grinding, selection of buried planes;
  • cutting thorns;

groove of complex grooves on furniture parts (balusters, legs).

With the use of special equipment such work can be done with other soft materials (plastic, plexiglass and even aluminum). More experience and skill will require:

  • precise processing of buried planes;
  • manufacturing of assembly grooves of complex configuration;
  • manufacturing of reliefs of furniture panels;
  • copying complex sculptural drawings.

Varieties of hand milling machines

All models of milling cutters can be divided into vertical (sometimes they are called “top”), edge and lamellar. The most convenient to use for a beginner is a submersible vertical milling cutter.

In this embodiment, the body of the mechanism, together with the motor and the cutter, travels along special guides. The built-in springs make it possible to smoothly lower the milling cutter, having already installed the tool on the workpiece. You can also raise the cutting edge without lifting the milling cutter from the surface. These operations do not require an accurate eye and a lot of experience. The main difficulty for an amateur is to correctly adjust the depth of the milling. To simplify the operation, graduated scales and alignment systems are used.
